The International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) serves to promote the academic study of religions through the international collaboration of all scholars whose research has a bearing on the subject (c.f. Constitution, article 1). It consists in principle of its member associations which are established in various countries and regions throughout the world.
The IAHR was founded as an organization in 1950 on the occasion of the VIIth International Congress for the History of Religions, held in Amsterdam. The first Congress in the series was held in Paris in 1900. During recent years, the IAHR has grown to include more than thirty national associations. There are also four regional associations in Africa, Eastern Africa, Latin America and Europe.
